The perception that when one believes in God, he will live happily ever after, free from problems and hardships, is a mistake.

Allah said in the Quran,

“Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: ‘We believe,’ and will not be tested?”

He tested everyone before us, including the prophets and messengers, when He say,

“And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allaah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allaah knows all that before putting them to test)”

Sometimes He tests us with calamities and tribulations in order to distinguish the believer from the disbeliever, the obedient from the disobedient, the grateful from the ungrateful.
