There are several Quranic verses and Ahaadith regarding marriage and choosing a spouse in Islam.

Below is the commonly used one, as mostly seen in our wedding invitations. 😀

Allah said in the Quran,

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Surrah Ar Rum (30:21)
The Romans

Getting married is one of the favors of our Lord that we should always be thankful for.

Not everyone is able to do so, may it be for whatever reason.

There are many qualities that we look for a potential spouse.

In Islam, the Prophet laid out the best characteristics to look for.

And you can never go wrong in choosing these.

All praises and thanks be to The One who send him (Peace and blessings be upon him).

Narrated AbuHurayrah Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said,

‘When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. If you do not do so, there will be temptation on Earth and extensive corruption.’

Tirmidhi, Nasa’i and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Al-Tirmidhi – Hadith 3090

Simply, what we look for a potential husband first is his religion and his character.

Abu Huraira reported:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A woman is married for four reasons: her property, her status, her beauty, and her religion. Thus, give precedence to the one with religion. May your hands be covered with dust (from helping the poor).”

Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4802, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1466

As for the women, in the perspective of a man, he should give precedence to her religion, before her other traits and qualities.

These two, if they are found in a couple, we say that In shaa Allah, their marriage will prosper, in this dunya and better in the Akhira.

And this is the peaceful and happy marriage that we are all longing for, praying for and experiencing in shaa Allah. 🙂

May Allah make our spouses be the coolness to our eyes, and may He grant our friends and relatives spouses who will be the coolness to their eyes too.

Ameen!
